JANE HARBOTTLE

Wildlife Artist

I grew up in Australia as my family emigrated there in the mid 1960’s when I was a baby. We eventually settled near Perth, Western Australia in a small coastal village where life for a child was idyllic. Swimming in the sea daily, messing around in the dunes and exploring the native countryside as yet untouched or claimed. Here my love, respect and amazement of the natural world was initiated and has been constantly expanding ever since.

Although the whole family returned to the UK in the mid 1970’s, I retain great affection for the country, many friends whom I visit every other year, and even got married to my husband Darren on the beach I played on as a child. Those early influences can be seen in my life and in my work.

After briefly considering a career in the N.H.S., I became a full time self-employed artist in 1987 and have now settled in Lowick, where I have my art studio and gallery. The outstanding Northumbrian countryside reminds me of those early days in Australia, with stunning coastline and unspoiled habitats, full of inspiration and ideas for my paintings.

I prefer to work directly from the actual subject when I can, as I like to portray the minute detail found in Nature. In my studio there are many interesting “bits & bobs” that I use for reference, along with sketches and photographs for the things I cannot bring back. There is always something new to see or to be seen in a new way, and my list of “paintings I want to do” gets longer with each finished piece, not shorter.

My painting both frustrates me, as I strive to paint and capture what I see in front of me, and at the same time excites and satisfies me on such a deep level, that I really have no choice but to continue with the challenge that Nature constantly sets before me.

Through my paintings I hope to extend to the viewer some of the beauty of Nature that is around us daily, and yet is often unseen, to offer a small glimpse into the great outdoors.
